The Mission

BrewNova’s mission is to empower independent breweries to reduce their energy costs and environmental footprint by transforming brewing residues into valuable resources. We design, install, and operate small-scale anaerobic digestion systems directly at the brewery, enabling the conversion of spent grain and yeast into biogas for heating or electricity, and biofertilizer for local use or sale. By managing the entire process — from setup to maintenance — we allow breweries to benefit from circular, low-carbon solutions without the burden of new technical expertise. Our goal is to make waste-to-energy accessible, seamless, and profitable for the craft beer industry.

The Challenge

Small and medium-sized breweries face rising energy costs — especially for thermal processes like boiling, cleaning, and pasteurization — which can account for up to 10% of their operational expenses. At the same time, they generate large volumes of organic by-products like spent grain and yeast that are typically given away to local farmers, without creating value. These residues are rich in energy and nutrients, yet remain largely untapped. Breweries lack practical, on-site solutions to transform this biomass into usable energy and biofertilizer. This represents a missed opportunity to reduce energy bills, improve sustainability, and unlock new revenue streams.

The solution

Our solution is a modular, on-site valorization system designed specifically for small and medium-sized breweries. Through anaerobic digestion, it transforms brewing residues — mainly spent grain and yeast — into biogas and biofertilizer. The biogas can be used flexibly: for heating during brewing, converted into electricity, or even upgraded for sale to energy distributors. The resulting digestate serves as a nutrient-rich biofertilizer that can be applied locally or commercialized. What sets us apart is our “build and operate” model: BrewNova handles the installation, monitoring, and maintenance of the system, so breweries don’t need to manage the technology themselves. This makes the transition to circularity simple and low-risk. Our solution helps breweries cut energy costs, reduce storage and disposal needs, and unlock new revenue streams — all while lowering their environmental impact. In the future, system upgrades may include advanced digestate separation for tailored fertilizer blends and improved nutrient recovery.
